I am switching over to movabletype. There is definitely more of a learning curve, but It seems to be more customizable, and it has quite a few more advanced features. The folks at weblogs.us have been great, but if you decide to go with them, just remember, they are hosting these blogs out of the goodness of their hearts, so it may take a while for them to get you set-up.

I would appreciate it if those of you who have links to this blog would switch them to The Fiddling Librarian 2.0.

From Reuters: "HEBRON: Hundreds of Palestinians have gathered to see a lamb born with what looks like "Allah" spelled out in Arabic on its coat.

Onlookers in the West Bank town of Hebron said the real significance was the fact the animal was born on Monday Ã‚– the day Israel killed Hamas leader Ahmed Yassin.

"This is clear evidence of God's existence," the lamb's owner Yahya Atrash told reporters. "It was born with the words 'Allah' on one side and 'Mohammed' on the other."

Palestinians said the Arabic letters of the name of God could be made out on the lamb's left flank, but it was harder to see the name of the prophet Mohammed."

More Life and Music

I have been told to talk more about my life and music, and less about technology. Well this one is for you, my adoring fans. This evening, I have been, for the first time, left home alone with both of my children while Ashley goes to class. Julia has been screaming that she wants her cheese to be in the shape of a circle....no rectangles daddy, even Dora has not been able to placate her. Avery is making those really annoying insistent uh..uh..uh... noises. I love both of them....but I occasionally wish I could have a week or two sans kids.

I know that it has been a great deal of fun watching to see what new "adds by google" will show up on my site, but I am ready to have an add free blog. If anybody knows of a webhost that fits my criteria, please let me know. I have applied for an account with weblogs.us, but the site has not been set up yet. They do sound very promising though.

Have you seen one of these on the library's computer plugged into the keyboard port? If so someone is keeping track of every keystroke on that computer. There are also software keystroke loggers which can log information such as, credit card numbers, passwords, e-mails to your mistress etc. There is a good explanation here. If you would like to buy one of these devices to spy on your own loved ones they can be purchased here.

This article from Library Journal describes how disgruntled first year librarians are. Their major complaint seems to be regarding the lack of practical classes in many of the top ranked MLS programs including the University of Illinois, Urbana-champain. I find it very interesting that cataloging is not required from every MLS program. I am glad that the IUPUI program still requires it, but I wish that there was more discussion of metadata, Dublin-Core, METS and other trends incorporated in the class.

Mining the "Deep" Web

This article from Salon.com describes the efforts of several new search engines to open up the Deep Web. Traditional Search engines such as Google only index about 1% of the information available on the web. Much of the rest of it "resides mostly in databases, shielded by a lattice of registration gateways, session cookies and dynamically generated links."
One of the new big players is Yahoo who now is offering a pay service called Content Acquisition Program. There are also several new search engines popping up including dipsie and Brightplanet, both of which promise to "deliver the deep web" to users. It will be interesting to see how all of this affects Google.

This article predicts that instant messaging is now in the state that e-mail was 10 years ago. I cant' imagine having enough to say through IM to be as attached to it as e-mail. I see a major possibility that I could say the wrong thing...IM doesn't offer enough time for me to contemplate the consequences of my actions!

Amazon RSS FEEDS

Amazon RSS feeds. This could be a very useful tool to those of us who work on collection development in small public libraries! It makes it easier to keep track of popular materials in multiple categories. Now if only we could get an RSS feed based on what our PATRONS want rather than Amazon's top 10. I guess we just need to encourage our patrons to start their own blogs with RSS feed!

The purpose of the Open Video Project is to collect and make available a repository of digitized video content for the digital video, multimedia retrieval, digital library, and other research communities. Researchers can use the video to study a wide range of problems, such as tests of algorithms for automatic segmentation, summarization, and creation of surrogates that describe video content; the development of face recognition algorithms; or creating and evaluating interfaces that display result sets from multimedia queries. Because researchers attempting to solve similar problems will have access to the same video content, the repository is also intended to be used as a test collection that will enable systems to be compared, similar to the way the TREC conferences are used for text retrieval.

While metadata and XML are obviously very important to those of us concerned with categorizing and retrieving information, it has recently come to light that this technology can also be used by the forces of evil. If you make changes in a Word document.....ie changing the name of the Dear"LIBRARY OFFERING THIS POSITION" part, it can be tracked with a little known feature of MS Word called invisible INK. This article describes the process.

More Cool Google Features

You guys probably already know about this, but I was searching around in the Google Labs area and I found a cool feature. Google glossary. If you start your search with the word define, google finds a definition for you. So What, you may say. Dictionary.com And Merriam-Webster online do that. Yes, I know, but with Google you can type an acronym, and it will take you to the most relevant listing. Plus, you don't have to move from Google. If you have the Google Toolbar, or Google deskbar installed, you don't even have to type in a URL.

Here comes baby #2

So, I have been gathering materials to digitize in my digital libraries class this Saturday, but after Ashley's trip to the Dr. today, I think that I may not be making the trip to Indianapolis this week. The Dr. said that Ashley was likely to go "at any time now." When I asked her if she thought I should plan on class this Saturday, or on the thirteenth of March, she told me...I can't tell you what to do, but if I were you, I wouldn't be leaving South Bend this weekend, she is ready to go!"

I am very excited about a second, little kid, but I am also nervous. This will mean a huge change in our lives....ie no sleep for weeks. We don't even have a girl name ready, so I am hoping for a boy. Julia has been a real handful this week. She probably senses that something is up. She was sick earlier in the week, and she still has some lingering issues, like hives all over her arms and legs. I took her into the Dr. and he told me not to worry. We have bought some special "big Sister" toys to give her when the baby comes, and we have been visiting our friends the Gibsons regularly, so she can get used to being around a baby.

On The plus side, Julia is really taking to potty training. She is going pee pee in the potty fairly consistently now. It seems though that she still is a bit uncertain about the purpose of her new Dora the Explorer underwear. :)

WorldCat Records Through Google?

OCLC has begun to provide access to some WorldCat records through Google. I tried searching for a few books, and it seems that the OCLC records are low in the google rankings. In order for this to be at all effective right now, you need to begin your search with "Find in a Library" then the book title. Try it with "Find In a Library" Benjamin Franklin, for example. The first result should be :Find in a Library: Benjamin Franklin : an American life ... If you type in your zip code, you will get a list of OCLC participating libraries that own the book. Kind of cool huh. If this is done on a wide scale, and can be standardized so that the OCLC records always come up first, this could be a great benefit for public libraries.

I am getting closer :)

Well, the Cass District Library Web site is getting closer to ready for prime time. I have discovered the joys of the template feature in Dreamweaver. I think that one of the drawbacks of learning to hand code in HTML before using a web development tool like Dreamweaver, is that you miss out on some of the truly useful features, because you just think of it as a GUI WYSIWYG program.

The template feature allows you to make a template are which is the same for all of the pages created from it. Now the cool part, say a link changes, change it in the template, and it changes in all of the pages you created from that template. Cool huh. I know that this is one of the most basic functions in Dreamweaver. I just never took the time to learn about it before.

Please let me know what you think about the Cass District Library Web site I welcome all suggestions. I am trying to make this site as user-friendly and useful as possible.

Yahoo Launches its own Browser: Drops Google.

I think that more competition in the browser world is a good thing for the average searcher. I love google, but the new Yahoo browser has some cool features. As you can see from this screen shot, Yahoo now shows RSS feeds. They also have a feature to "Add to My Yahoo." Also the "Web Pages that link to" and "Discover who owns" features are very useful. The see how...used to look is a link to this page at the Internet Archive Wayback Machine, a very cool site.

On The Other Hand, a Google search for the same site offers many of the same features. Here is what the same search at Google looked like.

While Google still reigns supreme when it comes to the number of pages indexed, Yahoo has some features that make it a worthy competitor. It uses a "quick browse" technology, so the results are often much fresher than Google's. This along with the RSS search and other features I mentioned, make this a good day for the browsing community.

Fun with RSS: New York Times Book News

In my continuing quest to understand metadata and web development, I have started to experiment with XML, RSS, and dynamic linking. As you can see, I have added New York Times Book News to my Blog. This was very easy, since they did all of the coding for me. All I had to do was cut and paste, but the Idea of RSS is very exciting. You can basically have constantly updated headlines and links.

Anyone who wants to can also use an RSS reader to keep up to date on any web-site with an RSS feed. For instance, you could read this blog from an RSS Reader. The RSS feed is basically an XML standard which makes it easy to syndicate information.

More Big Brother

I wonder if my obsession with patron saints generated the add for Mel Gibson's "Passion" ? Perhaps.....I do question the author's assertion that "EVERY BELIEVER IN JESUS CHRIST IS SUPPORTING 'PASSION'." I suspect that there are some believers in Jesus Christ who have never even heard of the film:)

Evolution in Schools

In a similar vein...I was listening to Science Friday today about attempts by many states to take evolution out of public school science curriculum and replace it with "intelligent Design" theory. The argument seems to be that evolution is just a "theory" and therefore opposing theories should be taught....sounds reasonable, except, evolution is indeed a theory, in the same way that gravitation is. Do we see the theory that we stick to the ground due to a "sticky" quality of dirt? Of course we don't. That is because the theory of gravitation, like the theory of evolution is a well established scientific theory which has withstood over one hundred years of experimentation and can make predictions about the future.

Some of the school boards have included language which questions theories regarding the age of the Earth and Sun, as well. The State superintendent of Ohio has called for language describing the age of the Earth to be four to five thousand years old!!!! He also called a team of top scientists from Case Western Reserve "Those kooks from Cleveland."

Evolution is just a theory......so we can make up anything with no evidence and call it Science.

Digital Imaging Tutorial

One of the required readings for my Digital Libraries course is this online tutorial. I found the section on metadata to be particularly useful. The class is very interesting. I think that it is going to be quite a bit of work, but like the information architecture for the web class, I feel like I am really learning some useful stuff.

Battlestar Galactica

I really enjoyed night one of this revamped version. While I have a great affection for the original TV series, I like this darker less cheesy version too. I like the fact that Starbuck is a woman, colonel Tie is an alcoholic A-hole and Apollo hates his father commander Adama. This new series definitely has a Terminator/Bladerunner/Dune/matrix theme....you know, we created the machines....then they took over and tried to kill us.

The Pianist

What an amazing, well made, completely depressing horrific work of art. I am glad that I watched it. I understand why Adrien Brody won the academy award. His portrayal of the a Polish Jew during the Nazi occupation was truly moving. Roman Polanski also won the Oscar for best director....Although since he is still not able to come to the United States, he was not on hand to accept it.

Let it Be ... Naked

LET IT BE...NAKED check out the "Exclusive New Two of Us Video" It's kind of cool .... Better than Free as a bird anyway. The naked album is great. Some friends and I compared it to the Phil Spector album this weekend and I for one was glad that it had been released. I like both versions. In particular, I enjoyed listening to the "naked" versions of The Long and Winding Road, Let It Be, Two of Us and Across the Universe.

I have finally found the patron saint to solve my problems

Isidore of Seville the patron saint of computer users and the internet. I really needed Isidore's help this week. I had motherboard meltdown number two. Let me state that again, I had my second motherboard failure in two months. Luckily the computer shop got a new motherboard installed for me in one day, however, when I got the machine home, I had a physical memory dump....this is one type of dump which does not lead to any sense of relief. I had a bad ram module...caused by the short on the motherboard...anyway, I seem to be up and running now and with a little help from Saint Isidore...Hopefully things will stay that way so I can finish my school projects.

Flu bug arrives early in Indiana

Ashley and I have had quite a weekend. Nether of us have been able to keep anything down, including water since Friday evening.

I am pretty sure that this has nothing to do with our Friday Applebee's excursion, since Ashley was infected too.

On a more positive note, we will be having our annual Erskine Blvd. Holiday candle walk again this year. Last year we were told that it was going to be canceled due to lack of interest, but today, I got a note on my door stating that it was going to be happening on December 13th. The holiday walk description is as follows...."Over 2,500 luminaries will line the boulevard from E. Ewing Avenue to Donmoyer Street." There will be carolers and "Santa Clause will be on the boulevard wishing everyone holiday greetings and passing out candy to the kids."

This will be from 6 PM to 9 PM Saturday, December 13th.

Quiet Earth, The (1985)
Michael, This is the film Sean and I were talking about. It has some flaws, but it is a very interesting movie....as I recall...there may even be some nudity, a feature I am sure that you will appreciate. Unfortunately, it does not appear to be available yet on DVD at least in the United States., therefore you can't get it from Netflix.

The University of Western Sydney admitted burying books to save money, as it battles to cope with an expanding student population in crowded and inadequate facilities. During the past five years the growth and its funding implications have reached such high rates that the University buried 10 000 books rather than pay storage fees. It is understood the books included first editions and rare 100-year-old works. The University of Western Sydney receives funding of less than $11 000 per student while the older, wealthier universities in Sydney receive about $17 000 per student. According to figures from the Department of Education, Training and Youth Affairs, the University of Western Sydney's income per student is the third lowest in the country, in spite of a quadrupling of enrolment numbers since 1989.

Even as an undergrad I considered any night that I stayed up past 10:30 to be an all nighter...well, I guess we will see whether I have learned my lesson or not next week, when I turn in my Annotated bibliography.

I watched A Mighty Wind last night. It is "mockumentary" from the folks who brought you Best in Show and This is Spinal Tap. It was really great to see the members of Spinal Tap reunited as the has been folk group "The Folk Men." The best part of the film for me, however, was Eugene Levy and Catherine O'Hara as the folk duo "Mitch and Mickey." This is a must see for anyone with even a casual interest in the folk movement of the sixties.

I just watched "Down with Love" Starring Renee Zellweger and Ewan McGregor. This is a film that I would never have seen if it were not for the fact that my wife has access to our Netflix account! (OK I got the Netflix service for her for her birthday...So I guess I really have no room to complain.)

The film is a modern day take off of a Doris Day- Rock Hudson film. It has real potential...But it never quite made it for me. I am not sorry that I watched it, but I couldn't help myself from continually asking "is this over yet?" Those of you who know me will surely be saying.." No surprise from mister 30 second attention span" but I generally have a good deal of patience for films.

Yes, you have caught on to my secret...I stay awake at night worrying about things like.... is my view of the world as completely righteous and infallible as I believe it to be? Am I correct in thinking that anyone who disagrees with my perfect world view must be either misguided-- ill-informed--or jealous....oh you are right...My world view is infallible...just as I suspected...I need not consider any alternatives :) Why waste my time considering all of those silly alternate points of view when I already know that I am right.

Ok Guys, here is a good place to find basic info on Cat Stevens/Yusef Islam. I know that we had some "distractions" during today's screening of "I Love My Dog," and perhaps you did not catch the humorous subtleties of the lyrics....but I forgive you. I was proud of you for your attention to that greatest of all albums...or at least in the top five...Tea for the Tillerman...(especially you Bridget)

Well, I just noticed the time stamp was wrong.

The rest of the world just switched back to standard time.....but here in Indiana, we didn't have to change our clocks or anything. Ironically, My VCR automatically "Falls Back" an hour...so I do have to change that one back to the right time :)

Good morning all.

Here I sit at 12:54 Sunday morning.....I seem to have insomnia....again.

I am trying to figure out the intricacies of Dreamweaver MX for my "Information Architecture for the Web" Class. I know that I should just look at the books I checked out from the library,, but I have this stupid pride thing about figuring it out on my own.

On the good news front, I have been offered a full-time librarian position upon graduation. I would be the "Adult Services Librarian" for the Cass District Library. I would be in charge of reference, adult collection development, and programming for the entire district.

Well, I read a really good book yesterday...The Curious incident of the Dog in the Night-time. It is a quasi-murder mystery told from the point of view of an autistic boy with super math skills.

I also just finished watching The Matrix Reloaded. While it wasn't as rewarding as the first film...It still had some interesting turns...And of course, the effects were great. I just felt that it could have been much tighter...For example, I could have done without so much of the Neo-Trinity love crap. I also thought that there was way too much slow Zion stuff.

On other good news, my 2 year old just peed in the potty for the first time...This may not sound like a major accomplishment to those of you without kids, but believe me, it is a big deal to me.

Only a few more days left and the cast will come off.....I really can't wait to be able to drive :)

Hello, this is my first attempt at a blog. I am going into the library profession, and thought that this might be a cool thing to look into for future library web pages.

I currently have a broken foot. A fractured 5th metatarsall to be exact. It is a real bummer. I can't drive for the next 4 weeks. Since I work 45 minutes from home and go to school 3 hours from home, this has lead to some challenges. Luckily my wife has been helping me, and I have some great "car pool" buddies who have managed to get me to school in Indy.

On the plus side, I have a nice supply of painkillers :)
